Creativity is integral to the human experience, and writing is a natural medium for expression. As AI and machine learning begin to infiltrate every industry, it’s not uncommon for writers to feel apprehensive about the impact technology may have on their craft.
Indeed, artificial intelligence has already begun to revolutionize the creative writing industry. Bot-written fiction almost always follows a rigid structure: A problem arises (the inciting incident), complications intensify (rising action), and everything ends with a climax and resolution (falling action).
With more and more consumers reading and purchasing books created by AI bots, this post will explore how artificial intelligence is changing the way we read as well as how we produce stories.
What Is Artificial Intelligence?
AI is computer software, hardware, or a combination that performs tasks that humans would typically do.
Today’s AI is primarily used for employment that is both dangerous and/or repetitive. For example, AI is often used to automate manufacturing, customer service, and healthcare.
However, experts predict that AI will soon replace many white-collar jobs as well. AI can be broken into three core components:
Raw data
Data sets are used to train the AI algorithms. Examples might include pictures, audio, or text.
There are two types of data:
Data that is manually inputted by human beings– This data is often referred to as “supervised data.” Examples might include product reviews.
Data that is collected by sensors– This data is usually referred to as “unsupervised data.” Examples might include weather patterns.
Algorithms
The “brains” of the AI software. Algorithms are, basically, instructions that the computer follows to solve a specific problem.
Algorithms can be broken down into four categories:
Machine Learning– A subset of algorithms that “learn” from past experiences. With machine learning, humans provide AI with data and then let the software analyse the data and draw conclusions.
Natural Language Processing– An algorithm that analyses human language. NLP is essentially used to determine the sentiment behind the written text. NLP can be used to perform tasks such as sentiment analysis and summarization.
Computer Vision– An algorithm that analyses images. Computer vision can be used to perform tasks such as image recognition.
Natural Language Generation– An algorithm that creates human language. NLG is used to create content such as articles or reports.
AI Is Helping to Create and Discover Great Writing
Artificial intelligence is revolutionizing the creative writing industry by allowing writers to automate parts of their creative process.
AI can help writers generate character and plot ideas, create new storylines, and perform other tasks that would typically be done manually.
AI can also help writers discover great stories by mining data from social media and other online outlets. For example, companies such as Jellyfish use algorithms to scour the internet for content. From there, the software filters the data and generates a list of potential content for the creator to select from.
AI is also being used to help creative writers refine their craft. AI programs can be used to analyse human language and detect patterns in writing. From there, AI can help writers identify areas that could use improvement. For example, AI could detect that a writer’s description of a character is repetitive or that the story doesn’t follow a logical sequence.
AI Helps Visually Impaired Readers Enjoy Stories
Artificial intelligence is helping publishers create accessible content for readers with visual impairments.
AI works in partnership with screen-reading software to translate written text into audio that is then read aloud to the reader.
AI can be used to create both written and audio content. For example, if a publisher is creating an article about basketball, the software could be used to interpret the article and generate a spoken audio version.
At the same time, AI could be used to interpret the written content, generate the spoken audio version, and then be saved to an accessible database. A reader could then access the article and audio content through their preferred method (i.e. an application on a computer or a smartphone).
AI May Soon Be Responsible for Most of Our Reading Content
Artificial intelligence is creating readable content.
AI is being used to create stories, articles, and other types of content. For example, companies like Automated Inc. are creating “Robo-journalists” that can write thousands of articles in a single day. Other companies, such as Arria, use AI to create short stories that are similar to haiku.
AI has also been used to create longer works of the content. For example, an AI program was used to create a full-length play that was then sent to human actors to perform on stage.
From the creator’s perspective, AI can be programmed to create content based on a specific set of parameters. For example, a creator could use AI to write a series of articles based on current events.
AI Is Automating the Process of Creating Stories
Artificial intelligence is impacting the creative writing industry by automating the process of creating stories.
AI programs are designed to create stories based on specific parameters. AI programs can be used to write full-length novels or shorter works of fiction.
AI programs are designed to perform certain actions based on certain inputs. For example, a program could be programmed to analyse a set of data, create a story based on the data, and then be saved into a database.
AI programs can also be used to create stories from scratch. In this scenario, a program could be given the parameters for the story and then write the entire story based on that data.
My thoughts on AI
The creative industry is evolving into creating automated input through AI, and the level of creativity is becoming low due to the fact that human input is no longer needed.
Artificial intelligence is helping writers create content, discover new stories, and even write entire novels from scratch. AI programs can be programmed to create content based on a specific set of parameters, which means that AI-generated content can be highly customized.
With the introduction of AI to possibly make things easier, it is, without a doubt, that authentic creativity and talents are being affected. This way, nothing seems to be original anymore. People are getting excited to make work easier, but they do not see the bigger picture; human natural creativity.
AI is rapidly ruining human creative minds and natural talents.
People are becoming more and more dependent on content automation through AI, and in future, someone will come up with an AI-detecting software: The creative industry will crash!
You’re 100% correct, it can be easy to not see the bigger picture; ie human natural creativity. This is why total reliance in AI can be detrimental. Let’s hope that artists and creative types still opt to do thing ‘the old way’
